05/14/2017 - Negba Launches New "Bogrim" Program to Help Pre-Teens At-Risk Transition into Middle School

A new Negba program recently began in Jerusalem – the Bogrim program to prepare pre-teens for the demands of 7th grade that await them in the near future. Sixteen 5th and 6th graders from three local schools in Jerusalem’s Kiryat Menachem neighborhood were identified and recruited for the pilot program which runs three days a week for four afternoons, held on the premises of the Guatemala School in Kiryat Menachem.

“I joined the Bogrim program so that I will be more prepared for middle school,” said Michal, 12. “I enjoy the lessons with my instructor, and I've made some progress in my studies already. Amir, also 12, agreed. “I’m a little scared about moving to a new school next year. The Bogrim program is a lot of fun. I feel like I’m growing and experiencing new things. I think I’ll be ready for next year at my new school.”

The academic component of the program consists of lessons in Hebrew, English and math taught by professional teachers, and time for homework preparation. The program also contains a dynamic social component aimed at strengthening the pre-teens self-image through a communications seminar with dogs, and through a martial arts workshop. Once a week a targeted group activity is held addressing topics of concern to the children relating to social/peer pressures and academic challenges they will face upon entering vastly larger, and more demanding, schools for 7th grade. The Bogrim program will help them meet those challenges as best as they can.
