05/29/2017 - Negba’s Beersheva Soccer Chug for Children and Youth At-Risk: Champions in their own Right

Negba places great importance in providing a variety of sports and cultural activities for its children, in addition to the strong academic and social components of its programs for children and youth at-risk. Each week on Tuesdays, some 50 Negba boys in Beersheva attend a soccer program at the local Goaltime Soccer Club and Fields, in three age-appropriate groups.

"I really love soccer, and it’s even more fun on Tuesdays at Negba when we play on a real soccer field with grass,” said Yam, age 9, from the Franck Levy After-school Home. Each week Yam’s group begins with warmups and exercises, followed by soccer drills and tactics and then a soccer match, all under the instruction of a professional coach. The fact that the city’s local soccer club, Hapoel Beersheva, is Israel’s reigning champion, is a big inspiration for Yam. “Obviously Hapoel Beersheva is the best team in the country! It won its second championship in a row a few weeks ago."

Negba encourages each of its children to find an area of interest that they are passionate out and to strive for excellence in it, be it sports, music, drama or other area. Aviv, a member of Negba’s Beersheva Teen Club, has found his passion in soccer, taking the sport very seriously. "I practice at Betar (another local soccer club) three times a week, and go to watch games. I am trying to make one of the local youth teams next year. It’s always a highlight for me to play as part of Negba’s program. The professional practice might help me reach my goal."
