11/02/2017 - From National Service Volunteer to Social Worker: Spotlight on Negba Staff Member Avia Abitbul

A critical element of Negba’s vision to impart true change and create opportunity for its children is structuring a stable and consistent environment during the long-term period- in some cases, over ten years- that Negba’s children are in its care. This continuity is enhanced when the children interact with consistent role models, and Negba is fortunate to welcome back a very familiar and trusted face, Avia Abitbul, to its staff ranks. Avia, 24, served as National Service Volunteer at Negba for two years and then as a counselor before leaving to pursue her Master’s in Social Work.

“It was great to return to Negba,” said Avia. “Negba is a warm home for the kids, and a wonderful place to connect to people. It’s a place which values its staff, where I grew professionally and know that I will continue to grow.”

After obtaining her MSW, Avia worked on a new program for teen girls in Beersheva. She rejoined Negba this Fall as social worker at two Negba after-school Homes for children in Beersheva where she provides guidance and counseling, oversees programming and workshops for the children’s parents, and liaises with municipal authorities. “The counseling area is very important to me. Alongside the academic, social and cultural enrichment Negba offers, it is essential to ground it all with emotional care to advance the children, and to give the staff the tools to offer emotional support as well.”

Avia’s return to Negba is closure of sorts. “When I was at Negba a few years ago, Albert Cohen was the social worker who supervised me, and he was my professional role model. It is because of him that I pursued a career in social work. Now I will work with him professionally again, on a higher level.”
